New approaches for stable isotope ratio measurements

چکیده

We demonstrate the first successful application of infrared laser spectrometry to the accurate, simultaneous determination of the relative H/H, O/O, and O/O isotope abundance ratios in natural water. The method uses a narrow line width color center laser to record the direct absorption spectrum of low-pressure gas-phase water samples (presently 10 μl liquid) in the 3 μm spectral region. The precision of the spectroscopic technique is shown to be 0.7‰ for H and 0.5‰ for O and O, while the calibrated accuracy for natural waters amounts to about 3‰ and 1‰, respectively.

Labeling of Human Serum Albumin with Stable Isotope of Bromine; an in Vitro Study

Background: Possibility to trace-label albumin with isotopes results in information concerning its synthesis, breakdown, and distribution in the intra and extra cellular spaces. The iodination of albumin is a widespread procedure used in scientific studies. Bromine not only is more reactive and less expensive than iodine, but bonds more easily with many elements. Therefore, it could be a suitab...

Isotope ratio measurements: new developments and applications.

After 2004 and 2008 (Vols. 378/2 and 390/2) this is the third issue of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry to contain papers on new developments and applications in isotope ratio measurements. Whereas Klaus Heumann was guest editor for the two previous special issues, in this issue Torsten Schmidt joins him as guest editor for the first time. His involvement with this collection of papers st...

Organic Reference Materials for Hydrogen, Carbon, and Nitrogen Stable Isotope-Ratio Measurements: Caffeines, n-Alkanes, Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, Glycines, L-Valines, Polyethylenes, and Oils.

An international project developed, quality-tested, and determined isotope-δ values of 19 new organic reference materials (RMs) for hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen stable isotope-ratio measurements, in addition to analyzing pre-existing RMs NBS 22 (oil), IAEA-CH-7 (polyethylene foil), and IAEA-600 (caffeine). These new RMs enable users to normalize measurements of samples to isotope-δ scales. Th...

Invited review article: Recent developments in isotope-ratio mass spectrometry for geochemistry and cosmochemistry.

Mass spectrometry is fundamental to measurements of isotope ratios for applications in isotope geochemistry, geochronology, and cosmochemistry. Magnetic-sector mass spectrometers are most common because these provide the best precision in isotope ratio measurements. Where the highest precision is desired, chemical separation followed by mass spectrometric analysis is carried out with gas (noble...

Zinc isotope ratios of bones and teeth as new dietary indicators: results from a modern food web (Koobi Fora, Kenya)

In order to explore the possibilities of using zinc (Zn) stable isotope ratios as dietary indicators, we report here on the measurements of the ratio of stable isotopes of zinc ((66)Zn/(64)Zn, expressed here as δ(66)Zn) in bioapatite (bone and dental enamel) of animals from a modern food web in the Koobi Fora region of the Turkana Basin in Kenya. We demonstrate that δ(66)Zn values in both bone ...
